Our company

You will find us situated directly at the freeway A8 between Pasau/Germany and Linz/Austria, exit Ort/Innkreis. The area we are located in is called “Innviertel”, a picturesque landsacpe between Inn and Danube, both of these mighty rivers building the frontier between Austria and Bavaria. There is much more to see and find here besides our gardens – old baroque towns with a famous hospitality, roman excavations, hidden natural beauties.

In our nursery, we see it as our main task besides raising of perennials to show gardening fans the beauty and splender of growings coming from all over the world. It is our aim to make the plants themselves the centre of our effort, f.i. presenting them in various showbeds including new introductions, at the same time testing their climatic aptness for middle European situations. Here somethings can be seen at any time of the year.

About me

Inhaber & Staudengärtner Christian Kress

Christian Kress

While I was raised in the southern part of Germany near Switzerland, I am now living with my family here in Austria, after several stations in Switzerland, Austria and the Netherlands. Like many other shrub cultivateurs I like to travel, looking for the perennials, I garden, in their natural surroundings for a better understanding and to take photographs of them.

What does “Sarastro” mean?

This question I get asked quite often and here is the answer. Sarastro is the high priest in Mozart’s “Magic Flute”.

Why did you name your company after a figure from an opera?

A few years ago I reproduced a dark violet seedling of a campanula, which resulted in a sterile, richly flowering sort composed of C. punctata and C. Trachelium, one growing wildly and the other seeding as wildly, the well-behaving result was called Sarastro, the evil ghost at the beginning showing its brave spirit in the end, exactly as my Campanula did.
